Beavers - Their Symbolic Nature

Beavers are great architects that can compare only to humans in their ability to alter the area they live in. To do this, they have to display a considerable extent of persistence. Steadfast and hard working, Beavers have become the synonyms of recalcitrance and diligence. It is not for nothing that schoolchildren of many US schools have "busy-as-a-beaver" as a motto. These qualities have provided Beavers with much popularity and acknowledgement. Beavers are supplying humankind with a natural means of creating habitats for other species and wetlands.

An act that provided for the recognition of the Beaver as a symbol of the sovereignty of Canada appeared in 1925. Nowadays, provincial coats of arms depict the Beaver, which symbolizes the unity of the nation. Beavers can be seen on other items, such as Canadian nickels, for instance. The Beaver has attracted attention of many people long before the act of 1925. The species was often considered the emblem of colonies. Thus, Quebec City chose to honor it after a successful defense in 1690. The citizens produced a medal that depicted a Beaver at the feet of a seated lady. The lady typified France, while the Beaver represented Canada.

The United States also acknowledged the importance of the Beaver. The history of at least two states is inseparable from the species. The nickname of Oregon is the Beaver State. New York also has the Beaver as its official animal. Thus, Beavers seem to have taken over the minds of humans and found much respect on the part of some countries.
